Authentic Char Siu (Easy Chinese BBQ Pork)

This homemade Chinese Char Siu BBQ Pork is sweet, sticky, and packed with classic Cantonese barbecue flavor—perfect for rice bowls, noodles, or bao.

Ingredients

  • 2 lb pork shoulder sliced into strips
  • 1/3 cup hoisin sauce
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp dark soy sauce
  • 1/4 cup honey divided
  • 3 tbsp brown sugar
  • 2 tbsp Shaoxing wine
  • 3 cloves garlic minced
  • 1 tsp five-spice powder
  • 1/2 tsp white pepper
  • 1 tbsp sesame oil
  • 1 tbsp mashed red fermented bean curd optional
  • Red food coloring optional

Instructions

  • Combine all ingredients except half the honey in a bowl.
  • Marinate pork overnight or for at least 8 hours in a sealed container.
  • Preheat oven to 400°F (205°C).
  • Place pork on a rack over foil-lined tray.
  • Roast for 25 minutes, flipping once and basting.
  • Brush with remaining honey and roast 15–20 minutes more.
  • Broil briefly if needed for charred edges.
  • Rest, slice, and serve.
